Transforming Indian Sport Through Psychology: The Story of Keerthana Swaminathan

In a society that values strength, speed, and medals, Keerthana Swaminathan is promoting something much less visible but very important: psychological safety. As Indian sports evolve, she leads a quiet but crucial transformation.

As Co-Founder and Co-Director of The Performance Doctor and Co-Director and President of the Indian Sports Psychologists Association, she is shaping professional standards, expanding awareness, and building support systems that place mental well-being at the core of performance.

Her path into Sport and Performance Psychology began with personal experiences. As a child, she did not see herself in sports and often felt out of place in athletic environments. Through cycling and team sports, she discovered how movement builds resilience, confidence, and identity. This personal journey eventually transformed into a professional mission.

Determined to understand performance beyond just physical skill, she pursued formal education specialised in sport psychology. Now, as a PhD candidate, she researches psychological safety, stress responses, and how parental behaviour affects athlete well-being in Indian youth sports. Her work helps athletes not only develop their skills but also gain emotional security and sustainable motivation.

A key moment in Keerthana’s journey came from a crucial realisation: many athletes do not struggle due to a lack of talent but because they lack emotional safety and support. Determined to change this, she took on the challenge of establishing credibility in India’s developing field of sport psychology. Creating standards and lasting systems required persistence, vision, and leadership.

Throughout this journey, she faced her own feelings of self-doubt as a young athlete and dealt with challenges in high-performance environments. What kept her going was her clear purpose. Committed to making sports safer and more aware of psychological factors, she measures resilience not by recognition but by the lasting effects she creates.

As part of She Is The Story 2026, Keerthana’s journey shows that true excellence in sport thrives where athletes feel safe, supported, and understood. She is building spaces where performance and well-being grow together — proving that impact lasts not in accolades, but in the lives we uplift.
