She Lost Her Taste, Not Her Purpose: The Story of Maria Abraham

In the green stretches of Kanjirappally, where the air smells of earth after rain, Maria Abraham grew up as the seventh child and first daughter in a family of ten, her childhood unfolding among rubber plantations and long meals led by her mother.

Her education took her from Yercaud and Kodaikanal to a degree in Sociology at Stella Maris College in Chennai. Yet her most lasting lessons began at home in her mother’s kitchen, where she learned to adapt recipes to her soil and people. After her mother’s passing, a handwritten recipe book of family dishes and remedies became her bridge between memory and purpose.

At 23, life took a dramatic turn when Maria moved to Ladakh with her newborn to join her husband. Scarce water, harsh cold, and limited provisions became her training ground in resilience — strengths that later shaped her entrepreneurial journey.

Back in Kerala, she turned to baking, mastering cake decoration and teaching others, many of whom went on to build successful careers. Years later, she returned to her family estate near Pala and began transforming surplus produce into traditional homemade foods. What started modestly grew into exhibitions across Kerala and India, and through her brand, “In and Around Pulloli,” she built a sustainable, community-driven enterprise rooted in tradition.

In 2022, Maria faced her most formidable challenge. Oral cancer required surgery that removed part of her palate, resulting in partial loss of taste, slight changes in speech, and difficulty eating, a profound irony for someone whose life revolved around food. Yet she chose resilience over despair. She adapted, relearned, and moved forward, refusing to let illness define her identity or her purpose.

As part of She Is The Story 2026 by The People Story, Maria Abraham’s journey reminds every woman, at every stage of life, that reinvention has no expiry date. She believes age is not defined by grey hair or illness, but by the moment one stops dreaming and striving. Dream boldly. Adapt with courage. Keep building even when life tests you. Stay resilient, and let your spirit continue to simmer with meaning.
