At a time when most would accept defeat, a young girl chose to fight. That girl was Dr Vijayalakshmi G Pillai. She missed her MBBS seat by just three marks. Most would have let it go, but she questioned it, applied for re-evaluation, and when the result proved her right, the system had already moved ahead. Refusing to be left behind, she challenged it in court and won. That moment shaped the doctor and leader she would become, a woman who never walks away from what is rightfully hers.
Dr Vijayalakshmi G Pillai studied MBBS at Calicut Medical College and specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. She later earned her MRCOG from London and completed ART and Laparoscopy training at Leuven, Belgium.
Years later, a deeply personal experience as a patient changed her perspective. While undergoing surgery herself, she noticed that surgical skill was valued, but patient care beyond the operation was often neglected. That realisation stayed with her and became the spark for a larger vision.
She took a bold step and left her job in Kuwait to found Vijayalakshmi Medical Centre in Ernakulam. What began as an infertility clinic evolved into a comprehensive hospital for maternal and child care. But building it was far from easy. In a new city, people doubted her abilities, authorities had to be convinced, and fragile IVF machines were delayed at customs. Yet she persisted, turning every challenge into an opportunity.
Her resilience extended beyond medicine. During the Iraq invasion of Kuwait, she found herself trapped on an island away from her husband for 19 days and helped bring the islanders safely to the mainland. The Kuwaiti government recognised her efforts.
She is a passionate traveller and has visited all seven continents, from Longyearbyen in Svalbard to Ushuaia in Argentina and Everest Base Camp, sharing her journeys to inspire others.
