On quiet nights, children across India look up at the stars and wonder if they truly belong there. Across villages and cities, space feels magical yet distant. But one woman refused to let that belief survive.
Dr. Srimathy Kesan, Founder and CEO of Space Kidz India, chose to change the narrative. Across the globe, children call her “Space Mom” because she instils a belief in space science among young minds.
Married at eighteen, she placed family responsibilities first while her own ambitions waited quietly in the background. Nearly two decades later, she returned to academics, pursued Management Studies in Travel and Tourism, and went on to earn her PhD in Education. It restored her confidence and reaffirmed a truth: it is never too late to begin again.
Her journey into space did not begin with rockets. It began with children. She noticed the sparkle in their eyes when they spoke about space, but she also saw hesitation. Girls held back. Children from modest backgrounds quietly shrank their dreams. As a mother, she could not accept that a child’s aspiration should be limited by gender, geography, or circumstance. That conviction became a movement, one that tells every child with certainty, “You belong in space.”
Her journey has been marked by rejection and setbacks. Entering the aerospace field without a technical background meant facing financial constraints, systemic barriers, and constant scepticism. Questions about her credibility lingered in the room. But she refused to let doubt define her. She turned it into fuel. Every challenge became preparation. Every rejection became refinement. Every setback-built resilience.
The defining moment came when children saw their work reach space. It was not just a technological milestone. It was a belief taking flight.
As part of She Is The Story 2026, her journey reminds us that dreams may pause, but never disappear. It is never too late to rebuild, relearn, or rise in spaces where you were never expected to belong. Background does not define altitude. Gender does not limit destiny.
The sky is not the limit. It is only the beginning.
