From Tamil Nadu to the World’s Highest Peaks: The Story of Muthamizh Selvi

Muthamizh Selvi, a Japanese language teacher from Tamil Nadu, has completed one of the most challenging achievements in global mountaineering by scaling the highest peaks on all seven continents. With her successful ascent of Mount Denali in North America on June 16, 2025, she became the first woman from Tamil Nadu to complete the Seven Summits challenge.

Born in Johilpatti village in Virudhunagar district, Selvi did not grow up with access to adventure sports or mountaineering culture. She later moved to Chennai, where she built her career as a Japanese language teacher. Her interest in endurance and high altitude climbing gradually evolved into a serious pursuit, demanding years of physical training, technical preparation, and financial commitment.

Her mountaineering journey reached a major milestone in May 2023 when she summited Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. Rather than treating this as a culmination, Selvi set her sights on a larger goal. Over the next two years, she systematically climbed the highest mountains on each continent. These included Mount Elbrus in Europe, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Aconcagua in South America, Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, and Mount Vinson in Antarctica.

The final and most dangerous stage of her expedition took place on Mount Denali. Known for its extreme weather and high winds, Denali tested Selvi beyond physical endurance. During the ascent, she and her climbing partner were caught in a severe storm near the summit. With no tent and limited shelter, they endured freezing temperatures for nearly sixteen hours. After surviving the night, they undertook a prolonged and exhausting descent to base camp.

Due to the severity of the situation, assistance was coordinated with Indian authorities and the Indian Embassy to ensure medical support and safe return. Selvi later described the experience as being pushed to the brink of survival.

Muthamizh Selvi’s accomplishment holds significance beyond records. In a country where women’s participation in high altitude mountaineering remains limited, her journey stands as a powerful example of persistence and self belief. Her story reflects how determination, discipline, and courage can carry an individual from a small village to the highest points on Earth.
