From Seven Years of Rejection to Sailing the World: Bharati Bandiwadar’s Inspiring Journey

In a small room in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, without electricity, a toilet, or even safety from monsoon floods, a young girl quietly nurtured a dream far bigger than her circumstances. That girl was Bharati Parshuram Bandiwadar.

When her father passed away at 12, life grew even harder. Her mother and brother shouldered the family’s struggles, while Bharati supported herself by working in hotels and shops. Brilliant in her studies, she completed her BSc, but unlike her sister who prepared for government exams, Bharati’s heart was set elsewhere. She wanted to join the merchant navy.

For seven years, she searched for a way in. Rejections came often, some cruel. One college even told her, “Marry a merchant navy guy, then you can go to a ship.” But Bharati refused to let stereotypes sink her dream.

Finally, during the pandemic, she found a college in Tamil Nadu willing to admit her. With a loan, she joined, and on her farewell day, which was also her birthday, the announcement came: she was placed in Maersk.

Her first vessel, too, began on her birthday. But life at sea tested her in new ways—physically, emotionally, and mentally. She doubted herself, yet learnt to swim, worked harder, and held her ground.

Today, after completing five vessels and preparing for her officer exam, Bharati stands tall, not just as a sailor, but as a symbol of courage and determination. Her story is proof that no storm is strong enough to drown a dream.
