In the small village of Goudenahalli near Mandya, Karnataka, a young girl named GK Vijayakumari began a journey that would one day inspire an entire nation. Born to farmer parents, her childhood was far removed from the glitz and glamour of sports. Her parents had no knowledge of athletics; they sent her to the Sports Authority of India trials simply because it was free. Little did they know that small opportunity would ignite a remarkable athletic career.
GK Vijayakumari, an international athlete and Ekalavya awardee, has emerged as one of India’s brightest stars in the 400m and 800m races. Despite financial struggles and limited resources, her talent shone early. She represented India at the Youth Asian Games within just a year. Her perseverance paid off when she won gold at the World Continental Tour in the 400m, proving her mettle on the international stage.
Her journey was not without challenges. Injuries, negative mindsets, and travelling 90 km daily just to train on a synthetic track tested her resilience. Yet, with determination and the unwavering support of her husband and current coach Tarun, and the guidance of her previous coach Lakshmeesha, she overcame setbacks and achieved career-best performances. Early victories, including the U-18 National Youth Championships and a silver at the Lusofonia Games, along with representing India at the Asian Games, Asian Track and Field Championships, and the SAFF Games, laid the foundation for her current success.
Her story is a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes from rural India. It is one of courage, resilience, and the power of dreams. From a small village to the international stage, she proves that no obstacle is too big when passion meets perseverance, inspiring the next generation to chase their dreams fearlessly.
