Most teenagers spend their years trying to understand what they want to do. But at just 17, Karthikaa Kannan, a young girl from a lower middle-class family, has already built a company, launched a student-focused startup, mentored young minds, and sparked ambition among students across India.
She was in the first grade when she first said, “I want to be a businesswoman.” At that age, dreams are soft and often forgotten, yet hers stayed alive. She watched her father work with passion and believed she would one day follow his path. But life changed direction. Her father’s business collapsed, and her home was hit with financial struggle, judgement, and humiliation.
Karthikaa watched her parents endure insults, and soon she experienced the same. One morning at school, she was asked to stand outside her classroom because her fees were not paid, despite being one of the top students. That moment could have broken her. Instead, it ignited her. She wanted to earn, not for luxury, but simply to ease her parents’ burden.
She tried multiple ways to make money, but nothing worked. Then came an unexpected opportunity. An IIT Bombay competition. Karthikaa’s idea was selected for the finals. She did not have the money to travel, but she borrowed it and went. That single step changed everything. Exposure, guidance, and connections opened her world in a way she had never seen before.
She began learning new skills, freelancing, taking internships, and slowly building her confidence. Her parents were unsure about her choosing business, but Karthikaa proved herself until they believed in her dream as much as she did.
Today, Karthikaa Kannan is the founder and CEO of The Narrative Identity, a company that helps people and brands tell their real stories. She is also building Nextep, a student platform with more than 350 students already on the waitlist. She mentors 25 students and consistently creates content to inspire others.
From standing outside a classroom to leading her own company, Karthikaa Kannan’s journey shows that determination can rise above any circumstance.
