The Queen Who Fights: The Story of Madhavi Gonbare

Every time Madhavi Gonbare steps into the ring, it’s not just a match; it’s a message. A message that grit has no gender, that dreams bow only to determination, and that an Indian woman can play chess with her mind and box with her heart, all in one breath.

Every punch she throws, every move she makes, Madhavi Gonbare reminds the world that strength and strategy can coexist. She’s not just a fighter; she’s a thinker, a World Chess boxing Champion with 4 Gold, 2 Silver, and 1 Bronze medals, and the first-ever Indian to participate in the London Chess boxing May Day Event.

Her journey began in childhood, deeply rooted in sports and discipline. An NCC “C” certificate holder, Madhavi’s passion for combat led her into boxing, kickboxing, judo, karate, and MMA. But in 2017, a coach introduced her to the unique world of chess boxing, alternating rounds of chess and boxing. Though she knew little about chess then, her brother taught her the game, and in her very first national championship, she won by checkmate.

From India to Türkiye, Italy to Armenia, she has fought battles both in and out of the ring, not just against opponents but against financial struggles and lack of sponsorship. Yet every time, her resilience found a way.

Even after a severe head injury and five stitches, she returned a month later to win gold again. That’s the spirit that defines her — unbreakable, unstoppable, and inspiring.

“Keep patience and consistency. You will definitely achieve your dreams,” she says.

Madhavi Gonbare, a woman who doesn’t just play the game, she changes it.
