India Win Maiden ICC Women’s World Cup Title By 52 Runs

India lifted their first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a high-quality final at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium on Sunday. This victory marked a moment of history for Indian women’s cricket, which has been in pursuit of this dream for decades.

India elected to bat first and put up a very competitive 298 for seven, thanks to a very authoritative innings from opener Shafali Verma, who made 87 off 78 balls. Her aggression in the powerplay gave India an early impetus, while Smriti Mandhana chipped in with a workmanlike 45. In the middle order, Deepti Sharma anchored the innings with a solid 58 as India remained on top throughout the middle overs, before the late runs from the lower order took them close to the 300-run mark, leaving India in a good position at the halfway stage.

The South Africans, chasing 299, were put under strain from the onset, but captain Laura Wolvaardt dug deep and compiled a fluent 101 off 98 deliveries. Her innings kept the contest alive despite falling wickets regularly at the other end. However, India’s bowlers struck at crucial junctures to regain control of the match.

Deepti Sharma completed a fine all-round game with returns of 5 for 39, ripping through South Africa’s middle order and dismissing Wolvaardt at an important stage of the chase. Her spell turned the match decisively in India’s favour. South Africa were eventually dismissed for 246 in 45.3 overs.

The victory was celebrated wildly throughout the stadium as India won their maiden major women’s ICC trophy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the team, calling the win “historic” while praising the players’ determination and resilience.

India has appeared in the Women’s World Cup final twice before – in 2005 and then in 2017-but lost both. This Sunday victory has been termed as a groundbreaking one and is likely to give more prominence and popular support to women’s cricket in the country. To the players, many of whom have been central to India’s rise in world cricket over the past decade, the victory in the World Cup stands as the culmination of years of progress and consistent performances on the global stage. That was a moment India had waited for, and it came emphatically-a landmark win that would shape the future trajectory of women’s cricket in the nation.
