India’s Deepest Female Freediver: The Inspiring Journey of Archana Sankaranarayanan

Some people navigate the waves of life; Archana Sankaranarayanan chose to dive straight into them. From the bustling courtrooms of Bengaluru to the tranquil depths of the ocean, Archana Sankaranarayanan’s journey is one of courage, passion, and relentless determination. A former corporate lawyer, Archana’s life was once defined by deadlines, pressure, and long work hours. Yet, a trip to Havelock Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands would change everything.

It was there, amid turquoise waters and coral reefs, that she discovered scuba diving, a world where silence spoke louder than words. The serenity and freedom she felt underwater sparked a passion that soon became her life’s calling. Archana pursued professional certifications, eventually achieving the Divemaster level, but the ocean had more in store for her.

Freediving, the art of diving without any breathing apparatus, called her. In 2023, she trained under Shubham Pandey in Bali, Indonesia, embracing the challenge of diving deeper and longer on a single breath. Her dedication paid off spectacularly: Archana became India’s deepest female freediver, setting 11 national records, including dives of 40 metres in Constant Weight and 38 metres in Constant Weight Bi-Fins at the Manado Apnoea competition in Indonesia.

But for Archana, it’s not just about records. She is actively working to promote freediving in India, helping establish AIDA India, the country’s official freediving federation, and encouraging women to explore the depths of both the ocean and their potential.

Archana Sankaranarayanan reminds us that it’s never too late to pursue what truly resonates with the soul, and sometimes, the bravest journeys begin when you take a deep breath and dive in.
