At 13, she sat in a small room in Tamil Nadu, her fingers trembling over a keyboard she barely knew how to play. The world around her was loud with opinions about who she should be, but in that quiet moment, Kanav found her voice.
Born in Michigan and raised between California and Tamil Nadu, Kanav grew up between two cultures that shaped her in very different ways. Today, she is a Tamil indie artist based in San Francisco, creating music that blends her roots with her global experiences.
Her journey began far from the stage. After studying Computer Science Engineering at Anna University, she started her career as an IT Support Engineer at Amazon and later moved back to the U.S. as a Senior IT Analyst. Coming from a family with no background in music, she built everything through curiosity, grit, and faith.
The road was not easy. People she trusted took advantage of her, stole her ideas, and made her feel small. Some told her being a female artist was pointless, others said she had zero face value, and one well-known artist made her do household chores while pretending to help with her music. The rejection and loneliness pushed her into depression, but she refused to break.
Kanav often says it is okay to take breaks, just never to quit.
She also taught ukulele for four years to adults, children, and even in government schools to show that anyone can start from scratch and learn an instrument.
Her turning point came when she met Atiium, the first producer who truly believed in her. Since then, she has released one track every month, each a reflection of resilience and hope.
Her message remains clear: people may doubt you, but keep going, because every small win counts.
