In the heart of Ernakulam, a boy once sat on a school bench, not as a player but as a substitute. That boy was Devanandhan Jr, known as Devan Jr. His journey began not with glory, but with rejection. In 7th grade, he wasn’t chosen for his school football team until a last-minute dropout gave him a seat on the bench. That moment lit a spark. Football became his everything.
He dreamt of representing India, trained hard, joined the Kerala Blasters Grassroots Program, and reached the final stage only to face elimination. Yet he kept fighting, captained his school team, and carried his dream forward. But college brought clashes and disappointment, pushing him toward a sport that depended solely on him.
After a street fight, he looked for self-defence classes and unknowingly walked into a kickboxing gym, a decision that would change his life. Under Arun Master, a former WAKO International Champion, Devan began a new chapter.
But addiction and a bulged disc injury nearly ended his dream. While the world celebrated Christmas in 2024, he lay on his bed, motionless. In that silence, he realised what he truly missed. It wasn’t the parties, but the punches, the discipline, and the grind.
Defying doctors’ words, he returned to the ring in May 2025, fought the national champion, and though he lost the match, he won hearts. Months later, he became Kerala’s Best Fighter, a State Champion, and a National Bronze Medallist, all within a year.
Now, he trains harder than ever, eyes set on turning his bronze into gold.
His message to the world is simple yet powerful:
“Never think you don’t have time. A lot can happen in a year.”
